How to Become a Teacher in Texas

There are requirements that you must complete prior to becoming a certified teacher in the state of Texas.

  • Apprenticeships: For non-degreed candidates interested in a one-year learning and practicing experience, under the guidance of a mentor teacher, please visit our apprenticeship webpage.
  • Bachelor’s Degree: Candidates must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university from anywhere in the world. Candidates can become a teacher with a variety of degree backgrounds.
  • Complete a Preparation Program: A candidate must complete an approved educator preparation program to become a certified teacher. Our Texas Education Agency accredited certification program meets all state requirements and is designed with the candidates’ convenience in mind, allowing them to pursue their goal of becoming a state teacher.
  • Pass Certification Exams: Candidates need to pass the appropriate state teacher certification exams to become eligible to teach. These tests differ according to the certification area.
  • Candidacy: After completing a portion of the required coursework, candidates select a pathway for the classroom experience. We offer clinical teaching (one semester) and internship (full year).
  • Application for Standard Certification: Once candidates have completed all program requirements including passing all certification exams, they will apply to be certified.
  • Get Fingerprinted: All candidates must be fingerprinted. This is part of a national criminal background check.
