dd-logo-brWho doesn’t love a good scavenger hunt? You and others are given lists of things to find, and you go around the neighborhood and ask for volunteers to give you the items you need to win the competition.
 
Scavenger hunts can be used in the classroom as well. Instead of students traveling around a physical space, they can find digital resources to use for information and further research. A great tool for this activity is QR (Quick Response) Codes®. The codes can save time and help direct students in their searches to make them more efficient and focused. They are easy and quick to make and free.
 
Add QR Codes to your technology tool box to make your life and your students’ lives easier. Here are some FAQs about using QR codes. 
  • How do I create a QR Code? There are many web-based generators. Basically you enter the URL of the website you want students to access. The generator will produce a QR Code (see sample below).

    Copy the QR Code image and insert it in a document or on a website. Then a QR Code reader on a digital device can be used to scan the QR Code, and the link is made immediately. There is no need to type URLs into a browser. Here are just a few of the generators and readers; check your app store on your digital device for even more.

  • How do I read a QR Code? You will need a QR Code reader (see sources above). You can find them in your app store. Once you have one on your device, open the app. You may need to allow the app to access the camera on your device. A scanning screen will come up on your device. Hold the device over the QR Code until it appears in the scanning screen. Once the scanner recognizes the code, your device screen will move to a browser and the web page will open.
  • What is the difference between a “static” and “dynamic” QR Code? A static QR Code is the URL for the target website; after the code is created, it cannot be changed. A dynamic QR Code can have the URL changed after it is created.

 

Instructional ideas:
  • A scavenger hunt is a nice fit for this tool. Create several QR Codes related to sources you want students to use for answering questions or conducting research. Print the QR Codes on paper and hang on the walls in the classroom. Students will take their digital devices to each of the QR Codes, scan it, and use it as directed.
  • Use QR Codes on vocabulary or other flash cards. Either the teacher or the student creates the codes to link the card to a web resource that illustrates and explains it. The QR Code could link to a web-based video.
  • Create a cube with QR Codes, one on each of the cube’s faces. Each QR Code could correspond to a question students would need to answer. You could use them for reflection questions before, during, and at the end of a lesson, for example.
  • Use QR Codes at stations for student-paced learning activities.

QR Codes are 3-D bar codes. A single code can contain up to 4,000 characters of information. QR Codes can link to online content, such as PDF documents, web pages, video, or voice recording.
