Mathematics Academies 2022

Have you attended one of the original 3-day Mathematics Achievement Academies for kindergarten-grade 1, grade 2, or grade 3?

Are you ready to go deeper in your learning?

If you answered yes to both of these questions we have two options for no-cost professional development during the summer of 2022.

  • Problem Solving and Discourse (see below)
  • Formative Assessment and Applying Content across the Strands (click here to jump to section)

Mathematics Achievement Academy:

Problem Solving and Discourse

Virtual Workshop Series for Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3

Connect problem solving experiences and discourse strategies to deepen the content experienced in the original Mathematics Achievement Academy, Kindergarten–Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3. Explore and apply the problem-solving model found in the TEKS as a tool to help students make sense of mathematics and to help the mathematics make sense to students. Explore and apply mathematical language routines to equip students to communicate their mathematical understanding with clarity. Experiences include virtual synchronous sessions, time to plan for job-embedded practice, and an online community.

Prerequisite Required: Completion of Mathematics Achievement Academy: Kindergarten-Grade 1, Grade 2, OR Grade 3 is a required prerequisite for this session. Prior completion of the Mathematics Achievement Academy will be verified prior to the start of the session. Participants who have not completed the prerequisite will be removed from the session to allow for those who are eligible to attend.

Important Information:
Teachers who successfully complete a Mathematics Achievement Academy: Problem Solving and Discourse session may be eligible to receive the $100 stipend. Stipends will not be provided to teachers who do not meet eligibility and attendance requirements. Successful completion includes the following components.

  • Teachers must have completed the original Mathematics Achievement Academy. Teachers may check their Region 4 account to verify they have received 18 hours of credit. Instructions for how to view a transcript may be found here.
  • Teachers must be assigned to teach kindergarten, grade 1, grade 2, or grade 3 mathematics at a local education agency within Region 4 for the 2022–2023 school year.
  • Teachers must attend the online, synchronous sessions for a total of 7 hours – 4 hours on the opening day and 3 hours on the closing day.
  • Absences, late arrival, and early departure will disqualify a participant from stipend eligibility.
  • Teachers must also complete the online, asynchronous sessions for a total of 12 hours over three weeks.
  • Teachers will need to complete an eligibility verification form at the academy training to receive their stipend. Each teacher will need his or her TSDS unique ID number. Instructions for locating the unique ID number from TEA may be found here.
  • Teachers who attended a problem solving and discourse mathematics achievement academy in the past year may not attend another session this spring or summer.

We appreciate your efforts to help us ensure that only kindergarten, grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3 teachers who have completed the original academy register for the problem solving and discourse academies. Teachers employed at campuses at which 40% or more of the students enrolled are educationally disadvantaged (eligible to participate in the national free or reduced-price lunch program) receive priority in registering to attend the academies. Administrators and instructional coaches from eligible campuses may attend if they meet the eligibility requirements though they are not eligible for stipends. If a session reaches capacity, administrators and instructional coaches will be removed from the session so that classroom teachers may attend.

Mathematics Achievement Academy:

Formative Assessment and Applying Content across the Strands

Face-to-Face Workshop Series for Kindergarten–Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3

Connect formative assessment and content from the strands of measurement and data to deepen the content experienced in the original Mathematics Achievement Academy. Explore six components of formative assessment and related implementation considerations. Connect whole number operations and fraction concepts explored in the original academy to hands-on activities focusing on measurement and data. Continue exploring how to support diverse learners through grade-level mathematics, problem solving experiences, and discourse strategies. Through hands-on activities, these academies are designed to strengthen participants’ knowledge of mathematics’ concepts and processes, improve overall mathematics instruction, and lead to student success on statewide assessments and post-secondary readiness.

Prerequisite Required: Completion of Mathematics Achievement Academy: Kindergarten-Grade 1, Grade 2, OR Grade 3 is a required prerequisite for this session.
