Mathematics Achievement Academies:

Problem Solving and Discourse

This spring and summer the Texas Education Agency will offer Mathematics Achievement Academies: Problem Solving and Discourse for eligible kindergarten, first, second, and third grade mathematics teachers.

The problem solving and discourse workshops will connect problem-solving experiences and discourse strategies to deepen the content experienced in the original Mathematics Achievement Academy. Click the following link for a sneak peek into the course content. https://tinyurl.com/MAAPSDPeek

A few notes:
  • Please register for only ONE training session. Participants who register for multiple training options will remain registered in the earliest session for which they registered and will be removed from later sessions.
  • Attending the full Mathematics Achievement Academy is a pre-requisite for this training. Those who have not met the pre-requisite will be removed from the session.
  • If a session is full, please submit your name for the waiting list. Any spots that become available will be offered to those on the waiting list.
  • If your plans change after you register, please cancel your registration as soon as possible so that the spot may be offered to a teacher on the waiting list.
We thank you for your thoughtful consideration as you determine the training session for which you will register. This allows more teachers to participate in the academy and more students to benefit from the activities.

Additional Information:

There are two pre-requisites to attend the training:
  • Teachers must have completed all 18 hours from the original Mathematics Achievement Academy for kindergarten-grade 1, grade 2, or grade 3.
  • Teachers must be assigned to teach kindergarten, grade 1, grade 2, or grade 3 mathematics during the 2020–2021 school year.
Prior completion of the Mathematics Achievement Academy will be verified prior to the start of the session. Participants who do not meet this eligibility requirement will be removed from the session to allow for those who are eligible to attend.

Teachers who successfully complete an academy may be eligible to receive the $100 stipend. Stipends will not be provided to teachers who do not meet eligibility and attendance requirements. Successful completion includes the following components.
  • Teachers must have completed the original Mathematics Achievement Academy. Teachers may check their Region 4 account to verify they have received 18 hours of credit. Instructions for how to view a transcript may be found at https://www.escweb.net/tx_esc_04/help.aspx .
  • Teachers must be assigned to teach kindergarten, grade 1, grade 2, or grade 3 mathematics during the 2020–2021 school year for spring sessions or the 2021–2022 school year for summer sessions.
  • Teachers must attend the online, synchronous sessions for a total of 7 hours – 4 hours on the opening day and 3 hours on the closing day.
  • Absences, late arrival, and early departure will disqualify a participant from stipend eligibility.
  • Teachers must also complete the online, asynchronous sessions for a total of 12 hours over three weeks.
  • Teachers will need to complete an eligibility verification form at the academy training to receive their stipend. Each teacher will need his or her TSDS unique ID number. Instructions for locating the unique ID number from TEA may be found at http://tea.texas.gov/curriculum/academies/.
  • Teachers who attended a problem solving and discourse mathematics achievement academy in the past year may not attend another session this spring or summer.

We appreciate your efforts to help us ensure that only kindergarten, grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3 teachers who have completed the original academy register for the problem solving and discourse academies. Teachers employed at campuses at which 40% or more of the students enrolled are educationally disadvantaged (eligible to participate in the national free or reduced-price lunch program) receive priority in registering to attend the academies. Administrators and instructional coaches from eligible campuses may attend if they meet the eligibility requirements though they are not eligible for stipends. If a session reaches capacity, administrators and instructional coaches will be removed from the session so that classroom teachers may attend.

Please email Shelley Bolen-Abbott with any questions.
