Candy Core Endowment Fund

New Teacher Scholarship

Candy Core was an education specialist at Region 4 Education Service Center (Region 4) who began her career as a devoted high school English/Language Arts and Reading teacher. She was a zealous educator who had a passion both for her students and her personal continued learning. Candy was taken prematurely from us but she left a gift—the Candy Core Endowment Fund—for future educators. It was her wish to foster the professional growth of new English/Language Arts and Reading teachers.

In order to fulfill Candy’s request, Region 4 is providing a one-time award to new classroom teachers (those certified in the last two years) in any Region 4 district or charter school. Recipients of this award will receive at no cost either:

  • One Region 4 professional development session to increase the teacher’s knowledge in the area of reading and writing instruction, not to exceed $150; or
  • One Region 4 instructional resource to enhance the teacher’s reading and writing instruction, not to exceed $150.

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be employed as a pre-k through twelfth-grade English/Language Arts or Reading classroom teacher in a Region 4 district or charter school
  • Have a classroom teacher certification with an effective date within two years of the current date

To be eligible for this award, the candidate must provide the following information:

  • A completed Candy Core Endowment Fund Scholarship application with the requested information, including campus principal’s signature verification
  • A copy of the SBEC Official Record of Educator Certification to verify current certifications. This information can be obtained through https://secure.sbec.state.tx.us/SBECONLINE/virtcert.asp

Candidates who fail to provide this information in full will not be considered for the award. The scholarship is not transferable or redeemable for cash. Scholarship awards will be granted until available funds are expended.

Candidates will be notified by e-mail if the scholarship has been awarded. Please allow six weeks between date of application and dates of session to be attended or for instructional resource to be delivered to campus.

Completed documents should be e-mailed to reading@esc4.net with “Candy Core Endowment Fund Scholarship Application” in the subject line.
