Master Reading Teacher (MRT) Certification Program

Region 4 Reading/Language Arts Solutions offers an online Master Reading Teacher certification program on a yearly basis. The course work is almost entirely online, with only four face-to-face meetings. All face-to-face meetings are scheduled on Saturdays. The program is designed to address the standards necessary to pass the MRT exam and meets the Texas Administration Code requirements for a MRT preparation program.



To be eligible for a Master Reading Teacher certificate through Region 4, you must: 
  • hold a Texas teaching certificate;
  • have at least three years of teaching experience;
  • satisfactorily complete the Region 4 course of instruction on the science of teaching children reading in accordance with the Texas Administrative Code;
  • satisfactorily complete Region 4 field-based practicum;
  • perform satisfactorily on the master reading teacher certification exam and complete any other applicable requirements for the certificate.

Applications are submitted electronically. After your application is processed, you can log in to check status and update contact information, when necessary.  To complete the Region 4 Master Reading Teacher application, you will need the following information: 
  • Contact Information (Legal name, phone, address, and an email address)
  • Social Security Number
  • The names, attendance dates, degrees, majors and minors for all colleges/universities ever attended
  • All teaching experience information (school/district names, phone numbers, dates, subject/grades taught, and supervisor names and phone numbers)
  • $50 non-refundable application fee, payable via credit card or debit card

After submission of the online application, the following documents must be received in the Region 4 ACP Admissions office (7145 W. Tidwell Road, Houston, TX 77092) at least 15 business days prior to the application deadline:

  • Official transcripts, in sealed envelopes, from the college/university conferring all degrees (including Bachelor's)
  • Service record reflecting at least three years of service
  • Copy of teaching certificate
  • Self-addressed, stamped envelope to return transcripts, if desired
The next cohort will begin September 2016. The application deadline is August 1, 2016.
